A New Vision for Public Legal Education in Vietnam
In 2010 and 2011, JES provided technical assistance on public legal education strategies to Agriteam’s Judicial Development and Grassroots Engagement (JUDGE) project in Vietnam. The main goal of this project was to increase access to justice for Vietnamese farmers, women and ethnic minorities through the dissemination of public legal information training and resources.
JES activities included delivering seminars on best practices on public legal education for the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) of Vietnam and providing mentoring and support for the development of materials for farmers on land disputes and for women on divorce.
JES also produced a documentary film on the project, Justice Through Knowledge: A New Vision for Public Legal Education in Vietnam.
- Improved legal information dissemination to the poor, women and ethnic minorities
- 260 people reached in 3 provinces and actively participated in the needs assessment, focus groups and evaluation sessions to provide input into the design/impact of the PLE materials
- 14,000 public legal education brochures distributed in 5 regions in Vietnam
- A documentary film on the project, Justice Through Knowledge: A New Vision for Public Legal Education in Vietnam, produced and screened in Vietnam seven times to people from 18 provinces for over 100 people
- Developed and provided standardized process for developing effective PLE materials using new methodology and tools to justice personnel in nine provinces
- Successfully trained 200 people to develop public legal education materials in 18 provinces
- Training of 4 MOJ, Women's Union and Farmers Association facilitators and 3 JUDGE staff members in needs assessment techniques, designing plain language materials, focus group facilitation for community consultation and delivering training sessions and evaluation techniques
